Join Us for Giving Day

For 24 hours on April 23, 2026, the Sonoma State community will come together to celebrate generosity, connection, and a shared purpose. Giving Day is a moment to reflect on what unites us and the transformative impact we can make when we support students and one another.

SSU's Hughes Lab and alumni research featured in New York Times

Sonoma State's Hughes Lab was featured in a New York Times article about ocean warming and scientific findings around the Pacific Northwest.  Professor Brent Hughes and his students have been growing bull kelp in a lab to speed its recovery from large scale purple sea urchin destruction and ocean warming. The article featured former graduate student researchers Rachael Karm '22 and Julieta Gomez '22, both of whom earned their master's in biology at Sonoma State.

"Rachael is now a research technician in my lab and Julieta is our colleague at the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. They are doing incredible work to help restore our kelp forests, and we are very proud of their efforts," Hughes said.
